Bharat, officially भारत गणराज्य (Republic of Bharat), is the most populous terrestrial nation and eighth largest by area, encompassing almost the entire Indian subcontinent from its western border with the Fatimid Trade Caliphate countries (Afghanistan and Iran) to its borders with Greater Zhōngguó countries in the north (Tibet) and east (Myanmar). Modern Bharat was formed in the aftermath of the collapse of Pakistan, when the territories of Pakistan and Kashmir were annexed under the revived अखण्ड भारत (Undivided India) policy of the Hindu nationalist government of India. Bharat is governed by both elected institutions and an unelected theocratic oligarchy. It has the largest number of active military personnel, its Drone Valley is the world's largest center of drone manufacture, and is the second largest military contributor to the Peacekeepers.

In the years following the establishment of modern Bharat, in response to Muslim separatism and climate change induced drug-resistant TB strains rapidly spreading in many of Bharat's overheated megacities, Vikram Rana's government declared a state of emergency. Article 50 in the constitution was amended to give corporations such as Cipla, Lupin, and Reliance Jio immunity from prosecution while pursuing government mandated directives in dealing with these threats. The Ministry of Health controversially transformed the Aadhaar indexed immune resilience tests into shuddhi pariksha purity rituals, elevating the employment and services available to TB survivors with high recorded immunity scores. "TB-resilient lineage preferred" entered common usage, and wealthy families began to pay for precision immunomodulators to fool the tests. Cheap bacteriophage therapies in the 120s eliminated the threat of TB for the upper castes, however the system was so entrenched that the guna of a persons resistance to new strains of Dengue and Zika from the increasingly warm monsoon seasons began to be used instead, for example during a series of army purges it became an official requirement for officers to have a good lineage.

Historically Bharat suffered from severe water shortages due to the effects of climate change on the monsoon patterns (and to a lesser extent from timing issues caused by Greater Zhōngguó damming rivers in Tibet in retaliation for Bharat's funding of the Mon Liberation Army in Myanmar). Successive Bharati governments used the water crisis and Brahmaputra access to tighten political control over Bangladesh and Bhutan. After a series of heatwaves in northern Bharat and the Terai region of southern Nepal killed millions, the Bharati army provided disaster relief operations into Nepal, and a pro-Bharti party won the next general election. In response to public anger over the deaths Bharat began a crash program of spraying sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, however was never able to scale this up sufficiently to make a large difference to global temperatures. Over time the build up of water storage and the advent of free solar desalinisation have largely eliminated water supply as in issue in modern Bharat, although heatwaves remain a major issue
